Beacons of Hope

Beacons of Hope, Inc.

Beacons of Hope, Inc., was established in January 2010, by Bishop Robert J. Baker as a means to sustain and strengthen the work of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Birmingham.

The Beacons of Hope board works to support parental choice and accessibility to Catholic schools. We support these schools with services such as scholarship assistance, financial management and other administrative assistance.

Families whose household income meets the federal poverty guidelines are able to apply for scholarship funding to help with the cost of tuition. Currently, 75% of students enrolled in metro Birmingham receive scholarship assistance.

The Alabama Accountability Act (AAA) provides $25 million dollars in annual tax credits for individuals and corporations who contribute to a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO).

In August 2013, the Diocese of Birmingham qualified Beacons of Hope as a SGO eligible to receive individual and corporate cash donations that it will use to grant scholarships to individual students that qualify for the AAA program. Donations to the Beacons of Hope’s scholarship program will assure that a portion of the annual $25,000,000 scholarship fund available will go to qualified students seeking to attend schools in the Diocese’s Catholic School System, or any other qualified private school in Alabama.

Donations to the Beacons of Hope SGO qualify for a State tax credit but must be paid by an individual donor up to $7,500 annually. AAA credits can only offset ½ of the tax shown on either the Form AL 40 or AL 20 with a three-year carryover. Donations for the 2013 tax credit must be received by December 31, 2013
